The study focuses on etymological discrepancy of the concept of the “rhizome” borrowed by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari from biology which became the basis and the form for realization of their “nematological project”. Our analysis of concepts of “rhizome”, “radix”, and “hyphe” has given the reason to state that the third term is more appropriate as a metaphor. It has been grounded that G. Deleuze and F. Guattari accurately and precisely identified and explicitly characterized nonlinear structures but advanced the “rhizome” as an inappropriate metaphor. Thus, the Internet has been taken as an example for considering processes that occur in nonlinear structures and for analyzing appropriate metaphors. It has been proved that network structure formations change the environment, herewith in the human mind there is a change in the understanding of this structure. The conclusion has been made that nonlinear horizontal and vertical connections are interlinked in the “hyphe” in contrast to the linear “radix”, which reflects vertical and linear connections, and the “rhizome” which encompasses horizontal (trans-species) and plane connections. In order to identify and explain the modern global network, it is recommended to use the term “hyphe” as opposed to the early Internet, which can be characterized as “radix” and “rhizome”. The study focuses on the analysis of the main traits of the rhizome: connection, heterogenesis, multiplicity, a signifying rupture, cartography, and decalcomania applied by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari to characterize nonlinear structures. But it is necessary to explain the processes occurring in nonlinear structures that were typical of the non-classical period of scientific knowledge, particularly, cyberspace of the first order, and, therefore, the term “radix” seems to be more appropriate for them; as to nonlinear processes, namely, cyberspace of the second order (we define it as hyphspace) of the post-non-classical period, it is more appropriate to use the term “hyphe” instead of the “rhizome” concept proposed by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari. It has been grounded that the French researchers accurately and precisely identified nonlinear structures and gave them detailed specifications but advanced the “rhizome” as an inappropriate metaphor. We can conclude that in this context, it is appropriate to apply the metaphor of “hyphe”. It is worth noting that the processes of Synergetic are also characteristic of hyphspace, that is, they are nonlinear structures.
